Paper 1 Booklet B · Q26 · 2 marks · Fractions and Decimals

Question

There was $\frac{3}{8}$ l of water in a tank at first. Xiao Ming poured $\frac{3}{5}$ l of water into the tank and used $\frac{5}{8}$ l of water from the tank to wash the dishes. How much water was left in the tank?
Answer: $\frac{7}{20}$ l

Worked solution

  1. Water left $= \frac{3}{8} + \frac{3}{5} - \frac{5}{8} = \left(\frac{3}{8} - \frac{5}{8}\right) + \frac{3}{5} = -\frac{1}{4} + \frac{3}{5} = \frac{-5 + 12}{20} = \frac{7}{20}$ l.
