St Nicholas 2025 P6 Maths Prelim — Paper 1 Booklet A Q14 Solution

Paper 1 Booklet A · Q14 · 2 marks · Ratio

Question

Freddy had \$250 and Karina had \$100 at first. After both of them spent an equal amount of money on a present, the amount of Freddy's money left was $\frac{7}{2}$ of the amount of Karina's money left. How much money did Freddy have left?
Answer: 2

Worked solution

  1. Let each spend $\$x$. Then $250 - x = \frac{7}{2}(100 - x)$, so $250 - x = 350 - 3.5x$, giving $2.5x = 100$ and $x = 40$. Freddy's money left $= 250 - 40 = \$210$.
