St Nicholas 2025 P6 Maths Prelim — Paper 1 Booklet B Q30 Solution

Paper 1 Booklet B · Q30 · 2 marks · Fractions and Decimals

Question

Alizah baked some cupcakes. She gave $\frac{1}{6}$ of the cupcakes to her siblings and $\frac{1}{4}$ of the cupcakes to her classmates. She sold $\frac{1}{2}$ of the remaining cupcakes. At the end of the day, she was left with 49 cupcakes. How many cupcakes did Alizah give to her siblings?
Answer: 28

Worked solution

  1. Fraction left after giving away $= 1 - \frac{1}{6} - \frac{1}{4} = \frac{7}{12}$. After selling half, $\frac{7}{24}$ of the cupcakes are left $= 49$. So $\frac{1}{24}$ represents $49 \div 7 = 7$ cupcakes and total $= 24 \times 7 = 168$. Cupcakes given to siblings $= \frac{1}{6} \times 168 = 28$.
