A toy car cost \$8 after a discount of 20%. Kenny was given a further discount of \$2 because of the SG60 promotion at the toy store. What is the total percentage discount for the toy car?

Answer: 3

Worked solution

$\text{Original price} = \frac{8}{1 - 0.20} = \frac{8}{0.8} = \$10$
$\text{Final paid} = \$8 - \$2 = \$6$
$\text{Total discount} = \$10 - \$6 = \$4$
$\text{Total \% discount} = \frac{4}{10} \times 100\% = 40\%$
