Question

The structure is made up of identical cubes. Without rearranging the cubes, what is the least number of such cubes that must be added to make the structure into a cuboid?
Answer: 48

Worked solution

  1. The smallest cuboid that can enclose the structure has dimensions $4 \times 4 \times 4 = 64$ unit cubes. The structure already contains $16$ cubes, so $64 - 16 = 48$ cubes must be added.
