Question

Muthu paid $\$18.50$ for a total of 20 curry puffs and sandwiches. He paid $\$0.50$ more for each sandwich than each curry puff. Muthu bought 10 more curry puffs than sandwiches. How much did he pay for each sandwich?
Answer: $1.30

Worked solution

  1. Sandwiches $+$ curry puffs $= 20$ and curry puffs $= $ sandwiches $+ 10$, so sandwiches $= 5$ and curry puffs $= 15$. Let each curry puff cost $\$c$
  2. each sandwich costs $\$(c + 0.50)$. $15c + 5(c + 0.50) = 18.50$
  3. $20c + 2.50 = 18.50$
  4. $20c = 16$
  5. $c = \$0.80$. Each sandwich $= 0.80 + 0.50 = \$1.30$.
