A file cost \$3.10 more than a pen. Hakim bought twice as many pens as files. He spent a total of \$92.70. He spent \$6.30 more on the files than on the pens. Find the total cost of a pen and a file.
Worked solution
- Money spent on files $= (92.70 + 6.30) \div 2 = \$49.50$
- on pens $= \$92.70 - \$49.50 = \$43.20$. Let there be $f$ files and $2f$ pens. Pen price $= \frac{43.20}{2f} = \frac{21.60}{f}$. Since each file costs \$3.10 more, $f \times (\frac{21.60}{f} + 3.10) = 49.50$, so $21.60 + 3.10f = 49.50$ and $f = 9$. Pen $= 21.60 \div 9 = \$2.40$
- file $= 2.40 + 3.10 = \$5.50$. Total $= 2.40 + 5.50 = \$7.90$.

Muthu paid $\$18.50$ for a total of 20 curry puffs and sandwiches. He paid $\$0.50$ more for each sandwich than each curry puff. Muthu bought 10 more curry puffs than sandwiches. How much did he pay for each sandwich?
Worked solution
- Sandwiches $+$ curry puffs $= 20$ and curry puffs $= $ sandwiches $+ 10$, so sandwiches $= 5$ and curry puffs $= 15$. Let each curry puff cost $\$c$
- each sandwich costs $\$(c + 0.50)$. $15c + 5(c + 0.50) = 18.50$
- $20c + 2.50 = 18.50$
- $20c = 16$
- $c = \$0.80$. Each sandwich $= 0.80 + 0.50 = \$1.30$.
St Nicholas 2025 · Paper 2 · Q4 · 2 marks
Benson had three fewer \$1 coins than 20\u00a2 coins. He used all his \$1 coins and two 20\u00a2 coins. The total value of the 20\u00a2 coins left was \$2. How much money did Benson use?
Worked solution
- Number of 20\u00a2 coins left $= 2 \div 0.20 = 10$. Total 20\u00a2 coins at first $= 10 + 2 = 12$, so \$1 coins $= 12 - 3 = 9$. Money used $= 9 \times \$1 + 2 \times \$0.20 = \$9 + \$0.40 = \$9.40$.

Bobby paid a total of $\$43.50$ for renting 1 skateboard and 1 pair of rollerblades. Bobby started his rental of both items at the same time and ended his rental of both items at 6.30 p.m. What time did Bobby start his rental?
Worked solution
- Renting both items together costs $\$10 + \$4.50 = \$14.50$ per hour. Duration $= \$43.50 \div \$14.50 = 3$ hours. Start time $= 6.30\text{ p.m.} - 3\text{ h} = 3.30\text{ p.m.}$
