Raffles Girls 2025 P6 Maths Prelim — Paper 1 Booklet A Q13 Solution
Question
The bar graphs show the sale of each type of stationery in a shop for two days. The scale of the graphs is not shown.
The total number of items sold on Day 1 was twice the total number sold on Day 2. What is the ratio of the number of pens sold on Day 1 to Day 2?
- 1. 1 : 2
- 2. 2 : 1
- 3. 5 : 2
- 4. 5 : 3
Answer: 3
Worked solution
- \text{Let one unit on Day 1 graph} = a, \text{ one unit on Day 2 graph} = b
- \text{Day 1 totals: Files} = 1a, \text{ Pens} = 5a, \text{ Notebooks} = 2a \Rightarrow \text{Day 1 total} = 8a
- \text{Day 2 totals: Files} = 3b, \text{ Pens} = 5b, \text{ Notebooks} = 2b \Rightarrow \text{Day 2 total} = 10b
- \text{Given Day 1} = 2 \times \text{Day 2}: \ 8a = 20b \Rightarrow a = 2.5b
- \text{Pens Day 1 : Pens Day 2} = 5a : 5b = 5(2.5b) : 5b = 12.5 : 5 = 5 : 2
