St Nicholas 2025 P6 Maths Prelim — Paper 2 Q14a Solution

Paper 2 · Q14a · 1 mark · Percentage

Question

A shop's brochure says: buy the first book at 10% discount and buy the second book at a smudged percentage discount, with the price of the second book equal to or lower than the first book. (a) Suzy paid \$21.05 for the two books. She paid \$1.45 less for the second book than the first book. How much did she pay for the first book?
Answer: $11.25

Worked solution

  1. If the two books cost the same, each would be $21.05 \div 2$. Adjusting for the \$1.45 difference: first book $= \frac{21.05 - 1.45}{2} + 1.45 = 9.80 + 1.45 = \$11.25$.
