Benson had three fewer \$1 coins than 20\u00a2 coins. He used all his \$1 coins and two 20\u00a2 coins. The total value of the 20\u00a2 coins left was \$2. How much money did Benson use?
Answer: $9.40

Worked solution

  1. Number of 20\u00a2 coins left $= 2 \div 0.20 = 10$. Total 20\u00a2 coins at first $= 10 + 2 = 12$, so \$1 coins $= 12 - 3 = 9$. Money used $= 9 \times \$1 + 2 \times \$0.20 = \$9 + \$0.40 = \$9.40$.
